The journey into my professional life began as a young gymnast. Years of training had left my body compromised. With an excessive sway back and externally rotated legs, sitting, standing, and kneeling were uncomfortable. I did not feel at home in my body, and gravity was not my friend.
Fortunately, during my training to become a licensed massage therapist in Hilo, Hawaii, I met my first Rolfing Practitioner from the Rolf Institute. It was then that I decided to experience the ten session series of Structural Integration. What a major turning point that was! Injuries from gymnastics melted away as my body structure became balanced again. With my pelvis properly aligned, my clarity and confidence improved; I felt empowered to accomplish most anything I chose to do! During my second session of the Rolfing series, I looked at my practitioner and declared, “I want to do this work!”
I was grateful to be taken under wing in that desire and by 1991 I completed basic training with the Guild for Structural Integration. My teachers were phenomenal and I was introduced to a whole new world of interrelationships within the body. The work sang to me and I felt the gift within my hands.
Since then, I have been a full-time practitioner and continue to be an appreciative recipient of the work. I have continued to study with first generation master teachers trained by the founder of Structural Integration, Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Hundreds of clients have gone through the ten session series with me.
What I have quested most deeply is the energetic aspect of Structural Integration—how gravity can become a beneficial force in the body. Dr. Rolf referred to this in her references to the Line. The Line is a structural vertical axis around which the major segments of the body are organized. It is also a functional energetic channel for the beneficial life forces of gravity.
This quest regarding the energetic channel of the Line has led me to write Structural Integration and Energy Medicine: A Handbook of Advanced Bodywork. The work with my clients has inspired this book. I wanted them to have a guide to accompany them throughout the series. The book explains the principles and history of Structural Instruction. It details each session and provides powerful supports tools for people once they have completed their series. This is the work I am honored to do. I have the feeling it is one of the most profound gifts I could share with anyone!
